Insecurity In The North Fuels Rising Beef Prices – Anambra Butchers

From farm gates in the North to dinner tables in the South-East, insecurity is quietly reshaping the cost of food.

The soaring price of beef across South-Eastern markets has been linked to worsening insecurity in Northern Nigeria, according to the Chairman of the United Butchers Association at Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, Chief Emmanuel Chukwu.

Speaking in Onitsha, Chukwu said fear of kidnapping, bandit attacks and deteriorating road networks has made cattle trading trips to the North increasingly risky, discouraging many dealers from travelling to source livestock.

“Going to the North to buy cows now is like a suicide mission,” he said, noting that several traders have lost their lives, while transporters now demand higher fees to cover security risks.

These added costs, he explained, are eventually passed on to consumers through higher beef prices.

The market leader urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts against banditry, insurgency and violent herdsmen, stressing that restoring security is critical to easing the cost of living.

Chukwu also appealed to Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, to address the poor state of the Bridge Head slaughterhouse, describing it as dilapidated and in urgent need of repairs.

He reaffirmed the butchers’ support for the Soludo administration and congratulated the governor on his recent electoral victory.
