ECOWAS, Russia Deepen Ties As Security and Regional Integration Take Centre Stage
At a time when West Africa faces evolving political and security challenges, strategic partnerships are increasingly shaping the region’s path to stability and growth.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Russian Federation have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger cooperation following a high-level bilateral meeting in Cairo, Egypt, during the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum held from December 19 to 20, 2025.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, met with Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, where both leaders reviewed the state of ECOWAS-Russia relations and explored ways to deepen collaboration, particularly in response to recent developments in West Africa.
Discussions focused on democratic processes, including elections, as well as the persistent threat of terrorism across the sub-region.
Russia expressed its readiness to support ECOWAS in advancing its regional integration agenda, with emphasis on peace and security, infrastructure development and business-driven initiatives.
The Russian side also welcomed the establishment of the ECOWAS Business Council, describing it as a platform with the potential to boost trade, investment and private-sector engagement between West Africa and global partners.
The engagement underscores ECOWAS’ efforts to broaden its international partnerships while addressing security concerns and promoting economic integration as key pillars for sustainable development in the region.
