FRSC Cautions Against Flouting Road Traffic Rules

In an age where viral moments often trump common sense, Nigeria’s road safety authorities are drawing a firm line between content creation and endangering lives.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has condemned the rising trend of celebrities and social media influencers flouting traffic rules for online clout, warning that public roads are not content studios.

The Corps Marshal’s concern follows a viral video involving popular TikTok streamer, Habeeb Hamzat, also known as Peller, who was seen live-streaming while driving. This illegal act reportedly ended in a road traffic crash.

The FRSC stressed that live streaming, recording or any form of distracted driving violates traffic laws and puts innocent road users at grave risk.

In response, the Corps Marshal has ordered the Lagos State Sector Commander to commence prosecution of the individual involved for reckless and distracted driving, in line with existing regulations.

Calling on actors’ guilds, entertainment bodies and content creator communities to rein in their members, the FRSC noted that influencers wield powerful influence over young Nigerians and must promote safety, not recklessness.

The Corps warned that no celebrity status offers immunity from the law, adding that it will enforce sanctions against anyone found endangering lives on the road.

The FRSC reiterated that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged Nigerians to report dangerous driving behaviours, insisting that no online trend is worth a human life.
