Luanda Dazzles As Africa’s Future Stars Take Centre Stage At 4th African Youth Games

Luanda came alive on Saturday night as Angola delivered a colourful and symbolic opening to the 4th African Youth Games, setting the tone for what promises to be a celebration of youth, unity and African sporting excellence.

The official opening ceremony, held on December 13, 2025, at the iconic November 11th Stadium, was a vibrant spectacle featuring cultural displays and the traditional march-past of participating nations. Young athletes from an expected 54 African countries proudly paraded into the stadium, underscoring the continental reach of the Games.

In an inspirational address, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Mustapha Berraf, described the Games as more than a sporting contest, stressing their role as a tool for unity, social transformation and talent development across Africa.

He also highlighted Angola’s historic status as the first Portuguese-speaking nation to host the Games, commending its commitment to African sport and modern infrastructure.

A major highlight of the night was the parade of nations, with Team South Africa led by 16-year-old judo athlete Ayabulela Gwama and weightlifter Tyrell Stewart, while Team Gambia drew applause with a colourful and spirited appearance.

Berraf further noted that the Games serve as a critical qualification pathway for the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, adding to their significance for young athletes aspiring to compete on the global stage.

However, Nigeria’s participation was affected by logistical challenges, as part of the team’s official ceremonial outfits was delayed following a luggage diversion linked to an airline mix-up.

Nigerian officials spent several hours resolving baggage and visa-on-arrival issues, challenges that reportedly affected multiple teams amid pressure on Angola’s immigration system.

Despite the setbacks, the ceremony marked an inspiring and unifying start to the Games, with thousands of young athletes now set to compete in Luanda under the banner of African solidarity and sporting excellence.

Tony Nezianya is the official spokesperson of the Nigerian Olympic Committee and is in Luanda.
