UK Reaffirms Support For Peaceful, Credible Anambra Election – High Commissioner Montgomery Visits Awka
As Anambra State prepares for its crucial governorship election on 8 November 2025, the United Kingdom has reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic processes and promoting peaceful, transparent, and credible polls.
During a two-day working visit to Awka, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, met with key stakeholders, including Governor Charles Soludo, other gubernatorial candidates, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC, the State Commissioner of Police, and representatives of civil society organisations.
The engagements focused on technical and logistical readiness for the 5,720 polling units across the state, the security situation in the 21 local government areas, factors likely to influence voter turnout, and preparations for election monitoring.
Dr Montgomery reaffirmed that the UK does not endorse any political party or candidate but is committed to supporting Nigeria’s democratic framework.
“The UK supports Nigeria in conducting democratic contests in accordance with Nigerian law and the constitution.
Our focus is solely on ensuring the process is transparent, peaceful, and inclusive, and that it enjoys the confidence of the Anambra people,” he stated.
The envoy urged eligible voters to participate peacefully and exercise their civic rights, stressing that violence has no place in a democracy.
The visit forms part of the UK’s broader engagement with Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections, underscoring its long-standing partnership in promoting good governance, institutional integrity, and stability at all levels.
