Nigeria Begins Crackdown On Foreigners Overstaying Visas
In a bid to tighten border security and curb irregular migration, Nigeria’s immigration authorities have announced a nationwide clampdown on foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or violated entry conditions.
The operation takes effect today, 1 October 2025.
Officials say the move is part of wider efforts to safeguard national security, protect local jobs, and ensure compliance with immigration laws amid growing concerns about rising cases of foreigners abusing visa privileges.
Nigeria, with its status as Africa’s largest economy, has in recent years become a hub for business, tourism, and migration, making effective border management a pressing priority.
According to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), enforcement teams will carry out checks across airports, land borders, and communities, targeting individuals who have failed to regularise their stay. Offenders risk arrest, detention, fines, and deportation.
A senior immigration officer explained that the action is not aimed at discouraging genuine visitors but ensuring that those who enter the country respect its laws.
“Every sovereign nation has a responsibility to regulate entry and residence within its borders. Nigeria is no exception,” he said.
The operation comes as part of a broader government push to address insecurity, economic pressures, and cross-border crimes, which authorities say are sometimes linked to undocumented migration.
Foreign nationals currently in Nigeria have been advised to ensure that their papers are valid and up to date to avoid falling foul of the law.
