Nigeria At 65: Leaders Urge Collective Effort For National Renewal

As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, the Federal Government has called on citizens at home and abroad to rally around the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a united resolve to build a greater nation.

At a press conference in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, underscored the theme of this year’s anniversary: “All Hands on Deck.”

Mr Idris highlighted sweeping reforms under the Tinubu administration, pointing to gains in infrastructure, education, energy, healthcare, and the economy.

He cited the ongoing road and rail projects, revival of power initiatives, rehabilitation of health centres, and expansion of student loan schemes as evidence that Nigeria is on the right trajectory.

On his part, Senator Akume described Independence Day as more than a ceremonial date, but a time to renew the nation’s commitment to unity and progress.

He praised Nigerians for their resilience over six decades and urged every segment of society—from youth to elders, farmers to professionals—to play an active role in national development.

Both officials acknowledged the challenges facing the country but insisted that reforms are already yielding results, with inflation easing, foreign investment rising, and opportunities expanding for young people.

Activities lined up for the anniversary include the grand finale of the National Campus Debate on 30 September, and a Presidential Broadcast on Independence Day, 1 October.

At 65, government leaders say Nigeria remains a “work in progress,” but with renewed hope and shared responsibility, the country’s best days lie ahead.
