IGP Egbetokun Tasks Newly-Called Police Lawyers On Integrity and Reform

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has charged newly-called police lawyers to use their legal expertise to strengthen prosecutions, uphold integrity, and advance reforms within the Force.

Speaking at Force Headquarters in Abuja after welcoming 98 officers recently called to the Bar, the IGP said their success was personal and a national asset.

He noted that one of the officers graduated with First Class Honours, describing it as “a rare and outstanding feat” that made the Police proud.

Egbetokun reminded the officers that their new status placed them in a unique position as law enforcers and custodians of legal knowledge.

He urged them to ensure watertight prosecutions, provide reliable legal advice, align policing with human rights and constitutional standards, and inspire colleagues with discipline and professionalism.

He also highlighted the recent elevation of the Police Legal Section to a full Directorate of Legal Services, headed by an Assistant Inspector-General, stressing that the responsibility to make it excel now rested on their shoulders.

“The Police do not need lawyers in uniform for decoration,” he said. “We need officers who will make the law work for justice, discipline, and Nigeria.”

The Director of Legal Services, AIG Emmanuel Aina, urged the new lawyers not to seek posting out of the legal department, as there are prospects and already made clients.

DSP Sanwo Bamise, who spoke on behalf of the others, lauded the IGP for allowing them to excel.
