Anambra Police Arrest 54 Suspects, Recover Large Quantity Of Hard Drugs In Fresh Crackdown
The Anambra State Police Command says it is intensifying efforts to tackle cultism, drug abuse, and other disturbing social vices across the state, following a series of raids that led to the arrest of 54 suspects and the recovery of a large quantity of hard drugs.
Police operatives carried out targeted operations between 12 and 14 September 2025 in Dunukofia and Idemili North LGAs, where they apprehended suspected cultists and drug dealers.
Among the arrests was 25-year-old Chiderah Obochi, caught with substances believed to be Indian hemp.
His confession led officers to Umudioka Village, where 11 bags of cannabis sativa were recovered.
In a separate raid at Ogidi, 53 suspects, 38 men and 15 women – were arrested at a location allegedly used by cultists to plan violent activities.
The police say those found culpable after screening will be charged in court.
The Command raised alarm over rising cases of moral decay among youths aged 18 to 26, citing incidents of fake kidnappings, where couples staged their abductions to extort millions of naira from parents.
It also condemned the resurgence of cult-related violence, including a recent burial attack in Ogidi that left four dead and 15 injured.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operations combined both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, with drug abuse identified as a major factor fuelling violent crimes.
He added that the seized drugs would be handed over to the NDLEA for further action.
On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, the Command assured Ndi Anambra of its resolve to protect lives and property, while restoring sanity and peace across the state.
