CLO Warns Against Intolerance Ahead Of Anambra 2025 Polls
The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Anambra State branch, has cautioned political parties, candidates, and their supporters to steer clear of hate campaigns, insults, and unsubstantiated allegations as the November 8 governorship election draws closer.
In a statement issued in Awka and endorsed by Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme and others, the group expressed concern over the rising political tension and the resort to character assassination instead of issue-based campaigns.
Quoting Nigeria’s first president, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the CLO stressed: “We must make friends not enemies, think the best, not the worst, of others.”
It urged political gladiators to play by the rules, show mutual respect, and prioritise the dignity of human persons. According to the CLO, “insulting or casting aspersions on opponents never translates into political gain.”
The group also appealed to Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Abioye Orutugu, to convene a meeting with candidates and stakeholders to reduce tensions and ensure a peaceful exercise.
Reaffirming its theme, “Intolerance is a threat to democracy and democratic governance,” the CLO prayed for a free, credible, and widely accepted election devoid of violence, inducement, or manipulation.
