Disinformation: ECOWAS Steps Up Fight At Regional Conference

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deepened its strategic engagement to counter the rising threat of misinformation, disinformation, and anti-democratic narratives across West Africa and the Sahel.

Represented by Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, Mines, Water Resources and Digital Economy, Sediko Douka, ECOWAS President Dr Omar Alieu Touray,  the Commission took part in the Regional Conference on Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel in Praia, Cabo Verde, from 3 to 5 September 2025.

The three-day meeting brings together policymakers, media professionals, civil society and international partners to strengthen trust and resilience in the region’s information ecosystem.

ECOWAS has been showcasing its initiatives to tackle harmful online content, while contributing insights on key themes such as harmonised policy frameworks, artificial intelligence and elections, the role of media and community leaders in countering disinformation, and plans for a regional observatory to monitor information threats.
