Millions of households across West Africa still rely on firewood and charcoal for daily cooking, exposing families, especially women and children, to harmful smoke and environmental degradation.

To tackle this, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened a high-level meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, to advance its Regional Clean Cooking Action in West Africa (ReCCAWA).

Backed by €15.5 million in funding from the European Union and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the four-year programme will expand access to clean, efficient and affordable cooking energy solutions across the region.

The initiative is being implemented by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Spanish Cooperation (AECID), in partnership with Energising Development (EnDev).

Officials say the programme will not only protect public health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also empower communities through sustainable energy access.
