UNN Disowns Minister’s Degree Certificate Amid Growing Controversy
Integrity remains the foundation of public service — and when questions arise over the authenticity of academic or professional credentials, public trust is quickly eroded.
This principle now sits at the heart of a fresh controversy surrounding Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uche Nnaji.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has officially disowned the Bachelor of Science degree certificate purportedly belonging to the minister, stating that he did not complete his studies at the institution and was never issued a certificate.
The university’s disclosure follows earlier findings by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which told Premium Times that the certificate of national service presented by Mr Nnaji was “strange” and could not be verified in its records.
The revelations emerged from an ongoing investigation by the newspaper into the minister’s educational and service background.
The NYSC had been asked to authenticate copies of the documents, prompting the discovery of inconsistencies in the minister’s claims.
While Mr Nnaji is yet to issue a formal response, the development has sparked renewed calls for transparency and accountability among public officials, with many Nigerians urging government institutions to ensure that every appointee meets the ethical and legal standards required for national service.
