INEC Dismisses Claims Of Irregularities In Osun Pre-Registration Figures

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed suggestions that voter pre-registration data from Osun State is inconsistent with historical patterns, describing such claims as “nothing further from the truth.”

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said a political party had questioned the large number of online pre-registrants recorded in Osun, noting that similar trends were observed during the 2021–2022 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise when the state consistently topped the chart.

Oyekanmi said, Osun led nationwide with over 154,000 pre-registrations just two weeks into the 2021 CVR, eventually reaching 708,782 by April 2022.

According to him, all online pre-registrants are required to appear physically for biometric capture, while its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) ensures duplicate entries are eliminated.

He also highlighted that voter registers are always displayed for public scrutiny to allow objections, noting that after rigorous verification, over 9.4 million new voters were added ahead of the 2023 general election, bringing the total to 93.4 million.

Reaffirming INEC’s commitment to transparency, the CPS  urged stakeholders to rely on verifiable records rather than conjecture, assuring that only eligible Nigerians will be captured in the ongoing online and in-person CVR exercise.
