CDS Reaffirms Military’s Commitment To Peace In Northern Nigeria, Showcases Security Gains

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces to restoring peace and strengthening security across Northern Nigeria.

Speaking at a two-day interactive session on Government, Citizens Engagement organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna, General Musa described the event as a timely opportunity to evaluate progress in the security sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Highlighting key achievements since taking office in 2023, the CDS noted the establishment of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre in Abuja and a new Department of Training at Defence Headquarters, aimed at enhancing operational readiness.

He revealed that over 800 Special Forces operatives have graduated, with more undergoing training in Jaji and Nasarawa to tackle asymmetric threats.

On ground operations, General Musa pointed to the restructuring of security efforts in the North-West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA and the creation of new Special Forces Brigades in Kaduna and Niger States.

He also noted the significant expansion of Forward Operating Bases and deployment of rapid-response units to high-risk zones.

“In just two years, more than 3,000 terrorists and bandits have been neutralised, over 120,000 insurgents have surrendered, and 2,000 kidnapped victims have been rescued,” he announced.

Over 2,300 firearms and 72,000 rounds of ammunition have also been recovered, he added.

Beyond combat, the Armed Forces are driving peacebuilding initiatives such as community sports, reorientation programmes, and engagements with traditional rulers, civil society, and local governments. “These efforts are helping to rebuild trust and enable displaced persons to return home,” he said.

General Musa further revealed military-led economic empowerment projects, including ranches, schools, and ICT centres, especially in the North-East and North-West.

He praised local institutions like DICON and AFIT for supporting logistics and defence innovation.

On regional collaboration, he recalled his 2024 visit to Niger Republic for cross-border security talks and announced Nigeria’s hosting of the African Chiefs of Defence Conference in Abuja from 25–27 August 2025.

General Musa’s remarks reflect the Armed Forces’ multidimensional approach to security—balancing military strength with diplomacy, development, and community engagement.
