AFN Shifts Focus To Human Security Organises Gender Advisers Training In Abuja
As modern conflicts increasingly affect civilians, Nigeria’s military is recalibrating its strategy to put people, protection and accountability at the centre of operations.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) commitment to a people-centred, ethically grounded and professionally accountable military.
Speaking at the opening of the Human Security and Gender Advisers Course at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Asokoro, Abuja, the CDS, represented by the Chief of Defence Standards and Evaluation, Major General Ibrahim Lassa, said Nigeria’s evolving security threats require a broader approach that prioritises the protection of civilians, human dignity and societal resilience.
He noted that today’s security environment is shaped by asymmetric warfare, violent extremism, communal conflicts and transnational crimes, stressing that effective security must go beyond territorial defence to include human security.
General Oluyede also commended the British Defence Staff for their continued support, describing the partnership as vital to strengthening civil-military relations and operational effectiveness.
He said the training aligns with the military’s strategy to build a force that is not only operationally capable but also responsive to the socio-cultural realities of its areas of operation, with human security and gender advisory roles seen as key force multipliers.
Earlier, Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral Saburi Lawal, had said the course would enhance professionalism and trust between security agencies and civilians, as participants were drawn from the AFN, Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
