ECOWAS Electoral Delegation Applauds INEC’s Reforms, Seeks Lessons From Nigeria’s 2023 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received a post-election follow-up and needs assessment mission from the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), aimed at reviewing Nigeria’s progress in implementing recommendations from the 2023 General Elections.
Speaking during the engagement in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, welcomed the high-powered delegation led by Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission, Mrs Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, and Ghana’s Deputy EC Chair, Dr Bossman Asare.
Prof. Yakubu acknowledged ECOWAS’ commitment to electoral reform across West Africa, describing the peer-review visit as a routine but vital democratic exercise.
He revealed that INEC had acted on all 13 recommendations addressed to it by the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission implementing those requiring administrative action and awaiting legislative input on others.
These steps form part of the Commission’s broader 142-point reform agenda, which he noted is already publicly accessible on INEC’s website.
Mrs Browne-Lansanah, visibly moved during her remarks, praised INEC for its generous support to Liberia’s electoral system, particularly the provision of ICT infrastructure.
She described the mission as a learning opportunity for all participating countries, stressing that shared challenges demand shared solutions.
“Through ECONEC and its principles, Nigeria responded to our needs,” she said emotionally. “What we gain here will help strengthen not just INEC but election management bodies across the region.”
INEC’s collaboration with ECOWAS, EISA, IDEA, and GIZ was also highlighted as vital to the success of electoral reforms across the region.
As West African democracies navigate increasing electoral challenges, Nigeria’s efforts continue to serve as both a mirror and a map for others seeking to deepen transparency, resilience, and credibility in their electoral processes.
