ECOWAS Trains Focal Points On Smarter Budgeting For West Africa’s Future
In a bid to sharpen its planning tools and optimise resource allocation, the ECOWAS Commission wrapped up the second phase of a strategic capacity-building session on the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) in Lagos.
Running from July 21 to 25, the workshop brought together key ECOWAS Focal Points from various directorates to deepen their understanding of the MTEF process a critical planning and budgeting tool that aligns resources with long-term goals.
Speaking at the event, Mr Molokwu Azikiwe, ECOWAS Director of Budget and Treasury, described the training as a step forward in ensuring that public resources are used efficiently to improve the lives of West Africans. “This platform allows us to dialogue, solve problems collectively, and share experiences,” he noted.
Mr Musa Gbogboto, representing the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, stressed the importance of aligning departmental activities with the regional Vision 2050 strategy. “It’s not just about knowing the numbers; it’s about understanding how our work fits into the bigger picture,” he said.
The workshop, held in partnership with GIZ, concluded Phase 2 of the programme. A third phase is slated for next week, targeting another batch of ECOWAS personnel.
As ECOWAS continues to pursue its vision of “Peace and Prosperity to All” by 2050, such training ensures the Commission stays on course — not just planning for the future, but budgeting for it smartly.
