Nigerian Doctors Give FG 21-Day Ultimatum, Threaten Nationwide Strike

Nigerian doctors under the umbrella of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of a total and indefinite nationwide strike if their longstanding demands are not met.

The warning followed an Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM) held on Saturday, 26th July 2025, in  Abuja. The meeting, which drew delegates from all 36 states and the FCT, was convened to discuss unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid arrears, the suspended CONMESS salary review circular, and the government’s failure to implement signed agreements.

The doctors expressed grave disappointment over the Federal Government’s “nonchalant” approach to addressing their demands, 19 of which remain unresolved.

They criticised the persistent neglect of the health sector, warning that the current situation could worsen brain drain and further collapse the nation’s already fragile healthcare system.

In a strongly worded communiqué, the association stated:

“We are compelled to act. Should the government fail to respond adequately within 21 days from 27th July 2025, we shall have no option but to embark on a total and indefinite industrial action.”

While voicing their readiness to continue engagement through dialogue, the doctors made it clear they would not compromise on the health and dignity of their members or the wellbeing of the Nigerian people.

The NMA expressed hope that the government would show commitment to the nation’s health sector and avert the looming crisis.
