IGP Urges United Front Against Fake News At Security Conference
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called for a collaborative and professional approach to tackling the rising threats of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, describing them as crimes capable of undermining national and global stability.
Speaking through his representative, DCP Kabiru Abdullahi, at the maiden Diplomatic and Security International Conference in Abuja, the IGP warned that false information whether local or international can spark serious unrest.
“The world has become a global village,” he noted. “Crises happening thousands of miles away can have devastating effects here when fake news spreads. Unsuspecting people may react to things they don’t fully understand.”
Egbetokun stressed that Nigeria’s own security challenges—including banditry in the North, insurgency in the North-East, and gun violence in the South are often made worse by false narratives circulated online and in the media.
The conference, hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), brought together diplomats, policymakers, media leaders, and security officials under the theme of strengthening diplomacy, intelligence, and media collaboration.
It aligns with Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy: Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora Engagement.
A major highlight was the presentation of merit-based awards to individuals and institutions recognised for their exceptional commitment to peace and security.
DICAN Chairman described the awards as “a call to action”, urging recipients to remain focused on promoting development, responsible journalism, and global cooperation.
He also announced the upcoming Diplomatic/Trade, Investment, Business Networking Conference and Exhibition slated for 28–29 October 2025, which aims to boost international trade and highlight Nigeria’s investment and tourism potential.
