NTF Hails Players’ Discipline At VEMP National Tennis Championship
The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) has lauded the professionalism and sportsmanship displayed by players at the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja, describing them as the “true champions” of the tournament.
Speaking on Friday, NTF Secretary-General Shammah Makpa expressed admiration for the athletes’ respectful conduct both on and off the court, noting it as a major highlight of this year’s competition.
“I give them kudos. They are the real champions of this tournament, not the Federation,” Makpa said. “Their attitude reflects the success of the competition in promoting fair play and discipline.”
With 192 players competing across all categories, men’s and women’s singles and doubles, Makpa praised the high level of competition and the emergence of fresh talent, especially following the exit of defending champions in the women’s singles.
“This is exactly what we aim for,” he added. “We’re seeing growth, and many of these young players could soon represent Nigeria at international levels — just like alumni now playing in the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup.”
Makpa also revealed exciting plans for the months ahead, including the Davnoth Open and CBN Open, which promise improved prize money and greater participation. Over 128 players are expected for the Davnoth tournament alone.
“Consistency is key,” he said. “We’re committed to giving players more platforms to grow and compete.”
Meanwhile, on the court, the action is heating up:
In the women’s singles, Khadijat Mohammed stormed into the final after defeating Mary Udofa 6-0, 6-3. She will face Etoro Bassey for the title.
In the men’s singles, Daniel Adeleye staged a comeback to beat Canice Abua 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. He’ll meet Lucky Danjuma in what promises to be a cracking final.
With quality tennis and positive energy on full display, the VEMP Championship continues to shine as a beacon for the future of Nigerian tennis.
