Adeleye, Yusuf Clinch Men’s Doubles Title At VEMP National Tennis Championship
Daniel Adeleye and Abubakar Yusuf have emerged champions of the men’s doubles category at the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja, following a hard-fought victory over Canice Abua and Musa Mohammed in a thrilling final.
The pair held their nerve to win 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 at the National Tennis Centre, Moshood Abiola Stadium, in a match that showcased grit, talent and mental resilience.
After taking the first set, Adeleye and Yusuf were pushed to the edge by a determined Abua and Mohammed, but dug deep to snatch the deciding tiebreak.
“It feels amazing,” said Adeleye, who revealed he had come into the tournament without prior training due to illness. “We stuck to our plan and gave everything. Now, I’m shifting focus to the singles final—I hope to lift another trophy.”
The duo’s path to glory included dominant wins over Sani-Inabo/Ehiegiamusoe, Yahaya Sani-Inabo/Benjamin (Rtd), and Danjuma/Ganiyu, before sealing the title in Friday’s final.
Meanwhile, Khadijat Mohammed has stormed into the women’s singles final, cruising past Mary Udofa 6-0, 6-3. She will now face Etoro Bassey in what promises to be a fiery clash.
Mohammed has yet to drop a set in the tournament, dispatching all her opponents with confident precision.
In the men’s singles, Adeleye will battle Lucky Danjuma in the final after staging a comeback win over Abua 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Danjuma advanced by defeating Uche Oparaji in straight sets.
Organised by the Nigeria Tennis Federation and sponsored by its President, Ifedayo Akindoju, the VEMP National Open has drawn 192 players from across the country.
The championship, which wraps up on 12 July, continues to be a vital platform for unearthing Nigeria’s next tennis stars.
With finals looming, the spotlight is firmly on the court—where every serve, volley, and forehand is shaping the future of Nigerian tennis.
