“No More Open Grazing In Owerri After July 24” — Imo Government Issues Final Warning To Herders

In a bold move aimed at restoring order and protecting livelihoods in the Imo State capital, the Imo State Government has declared a total ban on cattle grazing within Owerri city effective 24 July 2025.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Anthony Mgbeahurike, during a high-level meeting with cattle dealers and herders on Friday.

He emphasised that the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led administration remains committed to peace and unity but will no longer tolerate indiscriminate grazing that disrupts daily life in the capital.

“It has become worrisome that uncontrollable grazing is negatively affecting social and economic activities in Owerri,” Dr. Mgbeahurike said. “While the government has shown support through free anthrax vaccinations and other initiatives, herders must now show mutual respect and responsibility.”

He urged herders to avoid farmland destruction, compensate farmers for any damages, and adhere strictly to the new directive.

In a gesture of cooperation, the newly recognised leader of the herders in the state, Alhaji Shuaibu, apologised for past violations and pledged full compliance.

“We are committed to peaceful coexistence and will obey the government’s directive.

We appreciate the Governor’s inclusive policies and will play our part in building a clean and united Imo State,” he stated.

The move has been widely welcomed by residents, who have long called for action to curb open grazing within the capital.

With the July 24 deadline fast approaching, all eyes will be on implementation and the promise of a more orderly Owerri.
