Anglican Church Bans Political Speeches From Pulpit, Issues Fresh Guidelines For Welcoming Politicians

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has issued new directives to all its parishes across the country, restricting how politicians and government officials are received during church services and events.

In a memo signed by the Primate, The Most Revd Dr Henry Ndukuba, during the Episcopal Consultation held in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu, the Church expressed concern over the growing use of church platforms for political posturing, warning that such trends could undermine the sanctity of worship.

“The Church must not become a stage for partisan messaging,” the memo states. “While we welcome all, we must safeguard the integrity of our calling.”

Key highlights of the guidelines include:

Politicians may attend services, but must not use the opportunity to campaign or promote political agendas.

Church leaders must not eulogise or endorse political guests in a way that suggests bias or allegiance.

Where possible, political guests should not speak from the Church’s lectern, as it is consecrated for Scripture reading.

Any guest expected to speak must first be briefed on the Church’s apolitical stance.

The Church reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a neutral, spiritual body, open to all, yet firmly rooted in biblical values.

It also acknowledged its role in engaging with authorities on social and national issues, but stressed the need to keep the pulpit free from political interference.

“As the salt of the earth and the light of the world, we must not let politics overshadow our divine mission,” the Church concluded.

The memo has been widely seen as a timely step to preserve the holiness of worship and discourage the growing trend of politicising religious gatherings ahead of the 2027 elections.
