U.S. Backs Regional Public Health Preparedness With Emergency Management Training In Abuja

The United States government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emergency health response systems across West Africa, as the first cohort of the Regional Public Health Emergency Management Training graduated in Abuja on Friday, 5th July.

Hosted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in partnership with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the two-week intermediate-level training brought together 17 participants from seven countries: Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Liberia, and Mali.

The training focused on equipping public health emergency operations centre staff with essential skills in incident management systems which is key for effective outbreak preparedness and response.

With this initiative, the region is now better positioned to tackle epidemics and pandemics swiftly and collaboratively.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the Acting Program Director of the U.S. CDC Division of Global Health Protection, Asmau Aminu-Alhaji, applauded the participants for their commitment and stressed the importance of cross-border cooperation in public health.

The certification programme forms part of the U.S. Government’s wider support for global health security, aiming to build local capacity and resilience in managing health emergencies both in Nigeria and across the region.
