ECOWAS Advocates For Stronger Health Sector Reforms At UN Financing Conference In Seville
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is lending its voice to global calls for sustainable development financing at the 4th United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development, holding in Seville, Spain, from 30th June to 3rd July.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, who led the delegation, joined other global leaders and stakeholders to tackle key issues such as debt crises, international trade, innovation, and the fight against illicit financial flows.
In a frank intervention, Dr Touray highlighted the need for African nations to reclaim control of their healthcare systems. “We must reassert ownership of the health sector,” he stressed. “And to do that, we need a certain degree of autonomy to allocate our resources.” He didn’t shy away from addressing internal challenges either, acknowledging that “corruption is endemic in our health sector and needs to be tackled.”
The Seville conference is focusing on mobilising business and private finance for development, while urging commitments to social inclusion and climate responsibility.
For ECOWAS, the message is clear—financial reforms must go hand in hand with accountability and regional empowerment, especially in sectors as vital as health.
