NAWOJ Hosts Groundbreaking Online Workshop On NewsAssist AI For Female Journalists
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) National Secretariat has successfully hosted a game-changing online workshop aimed at introducing its members to the transformative power of artificial intelligence in journalism.
The training held on Friday, 4th July 2025, themed “NewsAssist AI Beyond the Byline: Exploring AI’s Role in Journalism and Investigations” marked a major step in NAWOJ’s commitment to empowering women journalists with cutting-edge tools for professional excellence.
Participants from across the globe were given complimentary access to NewsAssist AI—a pioneering platform created by award-winning investigative journalist Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi.
The app is designed to help journalists streamline their workflow, reduce stress, and boost productivity.
The Deputy National Chairperson, Dr. Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu, who led the session alongside Elfredah, applauded members for embracing emerging technologies.
She reaffirmed NAWOJ’s ongoing partnership with NewsAssist AI to enhance the capacity of female journalists across Nigeria.
Elfredah, who is also the founder of The Colonist Report UK and Africa, shared expert insights into how AI is revolutionising the newsroom. She noted that the NewsAssist AI app can transcribe up to four languages, save recorded audio, and significantly cut down time spent on routine tasks.
Other key highlights from the session included using AI for safer and more impactful investigative reporting, generating summaries, protecting sensitive data, and understanding tools like Google Gemini and ChatGPT.
The workshop wrapped up with a clear message: artificial intelligence is not just a buzzword—it’s a necessary tool for modern journalism. And NAWOJ is leading the charge in ensuring its members are ready.
