Nigeria To Host Global Ministerial Conference On Antimicrobial Resistance In 2026
In a historic first for the African continent, Nigeria has been named the host of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), set to take place in Abuja from 29th to 30th June 2026.
The landmark event, which follows previous editions held in the Netherlands, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, will bring together ministers, policymakers, UN officials, researchers, civil society, and private sector leaders under the theme of “One Health” — a unified approach addressing human, animal, and environmental health.
Describing AMR as a growing global threat responsible for around 1.3 million deaths annually, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said the country is ready to lead the charge against AMR through coordinated, cross-sector efforts.
“This conference will strengthen accountability, secure sustainable funding, and promote effective innovations. We are proud to host the global community and showcase Africa’s leadership,” he said.
The 2026 conference is expected to serve as a springboard for bold commitments and practical strategies ahead of the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR later that year.
It aims to accelerate global momentum in the fight against drug-resistant infections and push countries closer to meeting AMR-related 2030 targets.
With the backing of Nigeria’s Ministries of Health, Environment, and Livestock Development, the conference is set to spotlight Africa’s growing role in shaping global health solutions.
Details on registration and participation will be released in the coming months.
