SWAN Celebrates Customs Boss Bashir Adeniyi’s Landmark Election As WCO Chairperson
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his historic emergence as Chairperson of the Council of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
In a congratulatory letter dated 30th June 2025, signed by its Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN described Mr. Adeniyi’s election in Brussels as a defining moment for Nigeria on the global stage.
The association hailed it as a reflection of his dedication, professionalism, and visionary leadership.
SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, noted that Mr. Adeniyi’s elevation as the first Nigerian to head the 73-year-old organisation – representing 186 member nations – was a testament to the growing global confidence in Nigerian competence and capability.
“This historic feat is not only a personal victory but also a national pride,” the statement read. “Your swift impact as Comptroller-General has earned you respect both locally and internationally.”
The association also lauded Mr. Adeniyi for embracing sports as a tool to foster national unity and youth engagement, citing the successful hosting of the African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship by the Nigeria Customs Service as a shining example.
SWAN pledged its support to Mr. Adeniyi, expressing hope that his tenure at the WCO would further elevate Nigeria’s standing in international affairs while inspiring future leaders at home.
“Congratulations once again,” the letter concluded. “We look forward to witnessing even more trailblazing achievements from your office.”
