Gov Nwifuru Urged To Intervene As Amasiri Community Cries Out Over Akpoha Attack
By Sharon Akuboh
Residents of Amasiri in Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, have raised the alarm following a disturbing incident involving one of their sons, Mr Boniface Akwuba.
The victim was reportedly attacked and shot in the left hand by individuals from neighbouring Akpoha while working on his farmland.
The incident has heightened tensions between the two communities, prompting calls for swift intervention by the Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
A Plea for Government Action
The Amasiri community is appealing to the state government to urgently wade into the matter, investigate the attack, and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.
They are also requesting enhanced security presence to forestall further hostilities and maintain law and order in the area.
Longstanding Dispute
This latest attack is seen as a worrying escalation in what appears to be a long-standing dispute between the Amasiri and Akpoha communities.
Observers believe that if not addressed promptly and decisively, the situation could degenerate further.
Community leaders have called for the establishment of a peace and reconciliation committee to thoroughly examine the root causes of the conflict and propose sustainable solutions.
Urgent Steps Needed
The Ebonyi State Government is being urged to take the following immediate measures:
Conduct a thorough investigation: Identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack on Mr Akwuba.
Enhance security: Deploy security operatives to the affected communities to protect lives and property.
Promote dialogue: Facilitate peaceful engagement between leaders and stakeholders from both communities to resolve underlying issues.
By addressing the matter decisively, the government has a critical opportunity to restore calm, strengthen intercommunal harmony, and prevent further bloodshed.
As at the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the Chairman of Afikpo LGA for comments were unsuccessful.
