Bamboo To The Rescue: Nigeria Eyes Climate-Smart Housing With Local Innovation

In a push towards affordable, sustainable living, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology is spotlighting bamboo as a game-changer for Nigeria’s housing sector.

At a one-day capacity building workshop in Abuja, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Esuabana Nko Asanye, represented by the Director of Environmental Science Technology, Mrs Benadette Oguche, highlighted bamboo’s versatility and low carbon footprint as key reasons it’s being embraced in climate-smart construction.

“Bamboo is more than just a plant,” Asanye said. “It offers durable, eco-friendly options for housing, especially when integrated with homegrown solutions from the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI).”

The workshop, titled “Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction”, focused on how local technologies can help Nigeria meet its housing demands while reducing environmental harm.

The Permanent Secretary noted that with the rising need for adaptable, comfortable and cost-effective homes for low and middle-income earners, bamboo could be the sustainable answer.

While acknowledging challenges such as high initial costs and supply inconsistencies, she expressed confidence that the insights from the workshop would help bridge the gaps.

Director of Environmental Science and Technology, represented by Mr Ibok Edifon, said the initiative offers “a unique opportunity to rethink how we design and construct our buildings.”

He urged participants to embrace collaboration and innovation.
