EU Pumps ₦900 Million Into Northeast Nigeria To Combat Alarming Malnutrition Crisis

In a timely humanitarian move, the European Union has announced a €500,000 (over ₦900 million) allocation to tackle the deepening malnutrition crisis in Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions.

The emergency aid, channelled through the Nigeria Red Cross Society, aims to support about 170,000 households across states including Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara. Over 30,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition are expected to receive lifesaving treatment through the intervention.

With over 5.4 million children under five acutely malnourished across the two regions and 2 million at risk of dying without urgent care the EU’s support comes as a beacon of hope, especially with the lean season peaking between June and September.

“The funding will not only provide ready-to-use therapeutic food and critical healthcare, but also boost community outreach, water, sanitation, and long-term family resilience,” the EU said in a statement.

This contribution is part of the EU’s wider €12 million humanitarian support to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF), dedicated to rapid-response interventions in emergencies.

The region’s nutrition crisis is fuelled by prolonged conflict, displacement, economic hardship, climate shocks, and poor maternal-child feeding practices — all of which have made access to healthcare increasingly difficult for vulnerable families.

As the crisis worsens, this EU intervention signals not just a lifeline, but a call to global solidarity.
