Nigeria A Beacon Of Stability In West Africa – Foreign Minister Tuggar
Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has hailed the country’s democratic resilience as a model for West African stability, saying it offers a guiding light amid growing political unrest across the region.
Speaking on Democracy Day through a statement signed by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar said Nigeria’s continued adherence to constitutional rule, peaceful transitions of power, and regular elections sets it apart in a region grappling with coups and democratic backsliding.
“Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” he noted. “Our institutions may not be flawless, but they have endured. In the face of regional instability, we continue to prove that democracy, the rule of law, and civic participation are non-negotiable foundations for peace and development.”
His remarks come as ECOWAS battles the effects of military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger. Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to regional diplomacy and democratic governance as essential tools for conflict resolution.
With Nigeria being Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, experts say its political direction often sets the tone for the rest of West Africa. Tuggar echoed this sentiment, pointing to Nigeria’s legacy of defending democracy — from peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone to its lead role in pushing for democratic transitions within ECOWAS.
“Democracy isn’t just about us,” he said. “It’s Nigeria’s strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic vision.”
The Minister also used the occasion to applaud President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts toward economic recovery and political stability, expressing optimism that the nation is on course toward shared prosperity.
As West Africa faces its democratic test, Nigeria’s steady hand may well prove crucial to the region’s future.
