As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has thrown his weight behind the celebrations, pledging to attend the event on 21st June 2025. He also used the occasion to urge the union’s leadership to embrace innovation, uphold ethical standards, and reorient journalists to meet the demands of modern-day reporting.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and his delegation, Senator Akpabio expressed concern over the rise of misinformation in the social media space. He called for a renewed focus on responsible journalism that promotes unity and supports national development.
“The press was originally established to fight colonialism. Today, the focus must shift to nation-building. Let us use journalism to promote togetherness, not division,” Akpabio said.
Highlighting the impact of technology, he encouraged journalists to adapt and ensure that “breaking news does not break society.” He also reaffirmed the Senate’s readiness to partner with the media to counter the dangers of false narratives and social discord.
Comrade Yahaya, in response, called for legislative support for the proposed Media Enhancement Bill, aimed at empowering journalists and strengthening the profession. He extended a formal invitation to Senator Akpabio to join the anniversary celebration, where past leaders and media heroes will be honoured.
The visit also included key NUJ officials, including Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council. The meeting underscored the shared commitment to fostering a media landscape rooted in integrity, innovation, and national progress.
