In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s tertiary healthcare system, the Federal Government has commissioned five major infrastructure projects at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking during the ceremony on Saturday, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun described the development as a testament to productive collaboration between federal and state stakeholders in health.
He also pledged continued support for healthcare innovation in the state, while announcing the donation of the Ogun State Model College, Abeokuta, as the take-off site for the newly approved Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences.
“Healthcare delivery should not be defined by ownership but by its effectiveness,” the governor declared, quoting former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.
The commissioned projects include a 68-room Consultant Office Complex, a 180-bed Ward Extension, a modern laundry facility, a new Administrative Block, and a Works and Maintenance Department — now named after Governor Abiodun.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, hailed the initiative as part of a broader national strategy to enhance care, reduce medical tourism, and improve staff welfare. “With 12 new tertiary health institutions and over 15,000 health workers recruited in just two years, we are rebuilding trust in our health system,” he said.
Outgoing FMC Chief Medical Director, Prof. Musa-Olomu, reflected on the centre’s transformation since 2017, celebrating the projects as legacy milestones.
He also announced new names for the buildings in honour of notable Nigerians including former Governor Olusegun Osoba and Dr Ade Abolurin.
A statement by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Alaba Balogun, said the event concluded with plans for further expansion, including a MegaLab and emergency care units, positioning FMC Abeokuta as a future centre of excellence for industrial and public health care in Nigeria.
