Nigeria, Germany Forge Stronger Alliance On Energy, Trade, Migration

Nigeria and Germany are charting a bold new course in their bilateral relations, with energy, trade, and structured migration at the heart of renewed strategic talks held in Berlin between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and his German counterpart, Minister Johann Wadephul.

Germany reaffirmed Nigeria’s role as a key strategic partner in sub-Saharan Africa—its second-largest trading partner in the region—while both nations reviewed significant progress under the German-Nigerian Energy Partnership, first launched in 2008 and expanded in 2021 through the opening of a hydrogen office in Abuja.

Ambassador Tuggar underscored Nigeria’s ambition to export talent, not people, advocating structured cooperation with Germany to boost job creation and tackle the root causes of irregular migration.

“With over 220 million citizens and rising, Nigeria offers the skills and innovation that global economies need,” he noted, calling for joint initiatives that channel youthful energy into productive sectors.

Minister Wadephul hailed Nigeria as a “key African partner” and expressed Germany’s keen interest in deepening collaboration in renewable energy, skills development, and critical minerals essential for industrial and green transformation.

Tuggar further proposed value-added trade partnerships, leveraging Nigeria’s rich mineral resources to support industrial growth and sustainable development in both countries.

During his visit, the Minister held strategic meetings with Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Willem-Alabali Radovan, to advance economic cooperation and formalise legal migration frameworks. He also engaged with Nicolas Zippelius, Chair of the CDU Parliamentary Group on Development Affairs, to explore legislative opportunities for deeper cooperation.

In recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage, Tuggar received a formal invitation from Professor Lanz Rolla to participate in the 2025 Berlin Global Dialogue—underscoring Nigeria’s role in shaping international discourse on governance and development.

This revitalised partnership signals a forward-looking era in Nigeria–Germany relations—anchored in mutual respect, innovation, and shared prosperity.
