ECOWAS Moves Closer To Finalising Labour Migration Strategy
The ECOWAS Commission has taken a major step towards strengthening labour migration governance in West Africa with a high-level virtual consultation.
The session brought together Member States, regional partners, and development agencies to review the draft Labour Migration Strategy and Action Plan for 2025–2035.
The strategy anchored in ECOWAS Vision 2050 and aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals, aims to promote safe, regular, and rights-based migration.
It focuses on five key pillars: labour mobility, migrant rights, developmental impact, gender inclusion, and institutional cooperation.
Participants highlighted the need for ethical recruitment, better data systems, diaspora engagement, and support for returnees.
The draft Action Plan containing over 130 mapped activities was praised for its thoroughness and ambition.
The consultation results will inform the final draft to be validated in Accra, Ghana.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to making migration a tool for integration, development, and prosperity across the region.
