NYSC Member Sparks Community Spirit with Cemetery Fencing Project in Durumi
In a touching display of civic responsibility and youthful leadership, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Faith Ukpevo, has spearheaded a project to fence the Durumi Cemetery in Abuja—drawing widespread commendation and community support.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held with modest fanfare, marked the beginning of a project that many say is long overdue. The cemetery, which had been left open and vulnerable, will now benefit from a protective perimeter thanks to Faith’s initiative.
Stakeholders, including the Minister of Youths development, Ayodele Olawande, representatives of NYSC, NUJ FCT Chairman, and NAWOJ FCT Chairperson’ and the traditional leadership of the Durumi community, attended the event and pledged their unflinching support.
The community chief described the project as “a sacred intervention” that honours both the living and the dead.
Faith, visibly moved by the turnout, said the project was borne out of her desire to “preserve dignity in death” and contribute meaningfully to her host community during her service year.
Her initiative has not only touched hearts but also ignited conversations about the role of young Nigerians in nation-building and proof that even in a single year of service, one life can make a lasting impact.
