Nigeria Police, Religious Leaders Urge Journalists To Promote Unity During Ramadan, Lent

As Nigeria’s Muslim and Christian communities observe Ramadan and Lent, leaders are calling for peace, unity, and mutual understanding.

At a breaking of fast event organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council in Abuja, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Disu and religious leaders emphasised the role of journalists in fostering national harmony.

AIG Disu commended journalists for their professionalism and urged them to promote messages of compassion and togetherness. “This is a time for all faiths to work together for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.

Deputy Imam of Abuja, Yusuf Abdulateef, highlighted Ramadan’s spiritual significance beyond fasting, describing it as a period of purification and closeness to God.

He underscored the importance of interfaith unity, sharing how Christians and Muslims frequently join in prayers and meals during the holy month.

NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, stressed the media’s role in bridging divides, urging journalists to report fairly and foster interfaith dialogue.

“Our narratives can either unite or divide us. Let’s ensure our stories promote trust, not discord,” she said.

The event reinforced the need for collective efforts in strengthening Nigeria’s diverse but interconnected society.
