FG Reaffirms Commitment To Protecting Nigerians Abroad
The Federal Government has restated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of Nigerians living abroad.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who gave this assurance at a Ministerial Briefing in Abuja presented updates on efforts of his Ministry towards protecting citizens beyond the country’s borders.
Ambassador Tuggar, alongside the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted strategic interventions aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians in the Diaspora.
On his part, Dr. Tunji-Ojo outlined reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda that are helping to secure Nigerian borders and address irregular migration, while collaborating with international partners to combat transnational crimes.
The ministers assured that the government will continue to enhance collaboration between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior to ensure that the rights and welfare of Nigerians globally remain a priority.
In a nation where the media has been both a watchdog and a target, the Federal Government says it remains resolute in fostering press freedom and encouraging constructive opposition as cornerstones of Nigeria’s democracy.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave this assurance at the ongoing Ministerial Briefing Session organized by the ministry in Abuja on Thursday. He emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights and nurturing a democratic space where free speech and responsible journalism thrive.
“President Tinubu, as a foremost democrat, is fully committed to protecting the constitutionally guaranteed rights of all Nigerians and encourages constructive criticism and healthy opposition,” Idris said.
He lauded the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as it marks its 70th anniversary, describing the milestone as a reflection of the Union’s resilience and its critical role in upholding journalistic excellence and freedom of expression.
The briefing, which featured the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is part of the government’s effort to enhance transparency and keep citizens abreast of policy directions.
According to Idris, the sessions are “a vital opportunity for the Honourable Ministers to update Nigerians on the significant milestones achieved under their stewardship.”
He commended Ambassador Tuggar for his strides in strengthening Nigeria’s global image and praised Dr. Tunji-Ojo for reforms aimed at repositioning the Ministry of Interior to align with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The government, Idris assured, remains dedicated to creating an enabling environment for media practice, reiterating that “a free and responsible press is essential for good governance, transparency, and national development.
