FG Extends Retirement Age for Clinically Skilled Health Workers to 65

The Federal Government has approved an extension of the retirement age for clinically skilled health workers from 60 to 65 years, a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system and ensuring the continuous training of medical professionals.

The decision was disclosed by the Coordinating Minister for Health & Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, during a stakeholder meeting with leaders of key medical and allied health unions, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

Professor Pate explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave his approval, emphasising the need to follow due process for implementation.

The Ministry, he said, will collaborate with the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and other relevant bodies to actualise the directive.

He also reassured health workers of the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding issues, including the payment of seven months’ arrears under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

NMA President, Professor Bala Audu, commended the government’s leadership and pledged cooperation in achieving a smooth implementation of the retirement age extension and payment of arrears.
