ECOWAS Commits To Strengthening Humanitarian Assistance To Disaster-Affected Communities
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting vulnerable communities across its member states affected by natural disasters.
This commitment came to the fore, during a recent five-day technical mission to Cabo Verde, where ECOWAS officials monitored the implementation of a $770,143 aid package aimed at assisting victims of the 2023 floods.
Led by the Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, Dr. Sintiki Tarfa-Ugbe, the mission assessed progress in providing housing support to 80 families and livelihood assistance to 200 others.
Dr. Tarfa-Ugbe reiterated that ECOWAS’ humanitarian efforts extend beyond emergency relief, focusing on sustainable recovery and resilience-building.
Cabo Verde’s Secretary of State for Social Inclusion, Mrs. Lídia Lima, commended ECOWAS’ intervention, describing it as a crucial support system in the country’s poverty eradication efforts.
Similarly, ECOWAS Interim Permanent Representative to Cabo Verde, Mr. Jean Sempore, highlighted ongoing diplomatic engagements to align humanitarian efforts with regional and national development goals.
This initiative underscores ECOWAS’ broader vision of fostering an “ECOWAS of the People,” ensuring that communities affected by disasters receive not only immediate aid but also long-term solutions for sustainable recovery.
