The Delta State Government has refuted claims of borrowing under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, stating emphatically that the state has not taken any loans since the governor assumed office on May 29, 2023.

Speaking at a press conference in Asaba on Friday, the State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, dismissed reports suggesting otherwise, asserting that Delta remains financially robust.

“This administration has not borrowed a dime since May 29, 2023. Delta State is, without doubt, the strongest financial state in Nigeria. I stand by this with the facts at hand,” Tilije declared.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to funding major projects, paying contractors up to 70% in advance to mitigate inflationary pressures and ensure swift execution during the dry season.

Supporting the claims, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, described Governor Oborevwori as a leader of integrity and transparency.

He emphasised that the administration has funded its numerous projects solely from the state’s resources, debunking reports labeling Delta as a top borrower.

“With solid liquidity, the state is effectively managing its finances to address developmental challenges without resorting to loans,” Aniagwu asserted.

The state government urged the public to disregard misleading reports, reaffirming its commitment to fiscal discipline and development.
