The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, has issued an advisory to raise awareness about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), following a global rise in cases.
Though there is no evidence of an unusual increase in Nigeria, the NCDC has called for preparedness and preventive measures.
HMPV, a respiratory virus causing illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory infections, particularly affects young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
It spreads via respiratory droplets, close contact, and contaminated surfaces.
The NCDC advises the public to practice frequent handwashing, maintain respiratory hygiene, avoid crowded places, and seek medical care if symptoms like fever, cough, or shortness of breath develop.
Isolation is recommended for those feeling unwell.
Healthcare facilities have been urged to enhance infection control measures, prepare isolation centers, and stockpile medical supplies.
Surveillance efforts across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones are also being strengthened.
The NCDC further encouraged the public to rely on verified information and report symptoms to it’s toll-free line at 6232 and urged them to follow NCDC’s social media platforms for more updates.
These efforts aim to safeguard Nigerians’ health and prevent the spread of HMPV.
