The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called for the Kano State House of Assembly to prioritise the implementation of critical healthcare laws and ensure transparency in governance during the 2025 budget process.
Speaking at the public hearing on the budget, CHRICED’s Executive Director, Dr. Ibrahim Zikirullahi, commended the Assembly for its commitment to addressing the needs of Kano State citizens.
He emphasised the urgent need to implement the Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Law 2023, a groundbreaking legislation aimed at reducing maternal and child fatalities by providing free healthcare services to women and children in the state.
Dr. Zikirullahi urged the Assembly to establish the mandated Free Maternal and Child Health Consultative Council, which would oversee the effective execution of the law.
He stressed that delaying implementation would undermine the efforts of the previous Assembly and deprive citizens of critical healthcare services.
CHRICED also highlighted the importance of transparency in the execution of constituency projects and called for a legal framework to guide project selection and implementation, similar to the model in Lagos State, to enhance accountability and citizen participation.
The organisation also advocated for robust oversight mechanisms to ensure that government policies and programmes deliver meaningful results, emphasising that citizen engagement is key to successful governance.
Dr. Zikirullahi further urged the Assembly to integrate these recommendations into the 2025 budget, stating that doing so would set a powerful precedent for transparent, accountable, and inclusive governance in Kano State.
The public hearing showcased CHRICED’s continued commitment to advancing democracy, accountability, and effective governance in Nigeria.
