The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has raised serious concerns about a recent Federal High Court ruling halting monthly allocations to the Rivers State Government, cautioning against its impact on Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement, CISLAC’s Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, highlighted that decisions limiting state access to funds set a dangerous precedent, potentially destabilising regions and eroding public trust in the judiciary. “Blocking allocations undermines the autonomy of elected leaders and raises alarm over judicial integrity, particularly when recent rulings appear to favor select interests,” Rafsanjani emphasised.
He pointed out that the judiciary’s global perception could be damaged, warning that international organizations like Transparency International closely monitor judicial practices.
Such decisions could discourage investors, further jeopardising Nigeria’s economy.
Rafsanjani urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria to safeguard judicial standards and prioritise stability by ensuring that court rulings align with democratic principles.
He called on all stakeholders to focus on the welfare of Nigerians, stressing, “Our nation’s stability, unity, and progress must remain at the forefront of governance.”
