The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has mandated the Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to probe allegations of police extortions and harassment on motorists plying Nigerian roads.
There have been cases of extortion and harassment of motorists and commuters by officers of the Nigerian police on the highways in recent times.
The Senate condemned in strong terms such act of irresponsibility and urged on the acting Inspector General of Police to direct personnel of the force to stop such extortion and harassment of motorists and commuters plying the highways in the pretence of conducting stop and search.
This was sequel to a motion moved by Senator Onyekachi Peter (APC, Ebonyi North) at the plenary session.
Reading on the motion at floor of the senate, Senator Peter said the stop and search operation conducted by the police on the country’s highways is an attempt to take “undue advantage” of motorists and commuters.
Other senators who contributed to the motion were Ishaku Abbo, David Jimkuta and the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin who harped on the need for the Senate to take its civic responsibilities seriously.
In his remarks, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio urged the police boss to set up a committee to investigate the accusations of extortion, harassment and killing against its officers.
