Police Welfare: IGP Disu Seeks Urgent Support For Officers
For police officers working long hours to protect lives and property, better housing, improved working conditions and reliable pension arrangements remain critical to their welfare and effectiveness.
Against this backdrop, Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has sought sustained government support for improved police infrastructure, personnel welfare and operational funding.
Disu made the appeal on Wednesday, 4 November, during a meeting with the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, in Abuja, where they discussed measures to strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP thanked the minister for his support but called for further intervention in police housing, infrastructure and funding, stressing the need to address pension and welfare concerns affecting both serving and retired officers.
He also briefed Gaidam on preparations for the 2027 general elections, including personnel training and plans to address the security needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Disu emphasised that sustained institutional support was essential to ensuring the Force’s readiness to manage election-related security challenges.
Responding, Gaidam reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting police reforms and operational development.
He commended the IGP’s efforts and underscored the importance of intelligence-led policing, while highlighting government interventions in police infrastructure, personnel welfare, pensions and insurance arrangements.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, called for closer collaboration between the ministry and the Police Force to identify priority needs, improve service delivery and strengthen public confidence.
The meeting comes as the Police Force prepares for the security demands of the 2027 elections, with personnel welfare and operational readiness remaining key issues in the country’s internal security architecture.
