Katsina Gets Major Power Boost As FG Raises Capacity By 150%

Residents and businesses in Kankia, Katsina State, are set to benefit from improved electricity infrastructure following the commissioning of two new power transformers that have increased the transmission substation’s capacity by 150 per cent.

The new transformers are expected to provide additional capacity for businesses, agricultural processing and other economic activities that depend on a more reliable electricity supply.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced this on Friday, 23 October 2026, during the commissioning of two 60 MVA, 132/33 kV power transformers at the Kankia Transmission Substation.

The transformers replace an existing 30 MVA unit, raising the substation’s installed capacity from 60 MVA to 150 MVA, equivalent to approximately 120 megawatts.

According to the minister, the expansion will help accommodate previously unmet electricity demand and strengthen bulk power supply to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for onward distribution to consumers.

Tegbe described the project as a practical demonstration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places reliable electricity infrastructure at the centre of Nigeria’s development priorities.

He said improved power infrastructure was essential to supporting production, creating economic opportunities and improving livelihoods.

The minister commended the President for his commitment to strengthening the power sector, noting that investments in critical infrastructure must translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the Federal Ministry of Power, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Power Design Institute, engineers and other project partners in delivering the project.

Tegbe praised Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, traditional rulers and host communities for their support and cooperation.

He, however, stressed that the increase in installed capacity must translate into better electricity supply for consumers.

The minister urged TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and KEDCO to strengthen coordination, maintain the new equipment and ensure that the additional capacity delivers improved service to communities.

The commissioning marks an expansion of transmission infrastructure in Katsina State, although the actual benefits to households and businesses will depend on effective power distribution and the availability of electricity across the supply chain.
