Pope Leo XIV Approves Cardinal Tagle As New Dean Of Cardinals
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines has been elected Dean of the College of Cardinals, placing him at the head of the body of senior Catholic Church leaders who play a key role in the election of a pope.
Pope Leo XIV approved the election following the decision of the cardinals of the Order of Bishops on 8 October 2026, the Holy See Press Office announced on Friday.
Tagle, who currently serves as Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, succeeds Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, whose resignation from the position was accepted by the Pope.
The appointment marks a new chapter in the leadership of the College of Cardinals, a key institution in the governance of the Catholic Church.
